LIVING REMEMBRANCE PROGRAM
For
most people, trees are objects of powerful and close personal
attachment, symbolizing strength and duration. Their beauty
and grandeur improve our City's landscape and provide a special
place for play, relaxation and shade. It is in this spirit
that the City of Washington Shade Tree Commission has launched
a City oriented program known as the "Living Remembrance
Program". Donors may wish to establish live "family
trees", planted in memory of a marriage, birth of a child,
life of a deceased relative or friend, or simply to improve
the City's environment.
The purpose of the Program is
to replace or plant new shade trees within the City's
right-of-way (between sidewalk and curb). The donor
can chose the species of tree desired based upon
a designated tree list best suited to the site (under
utility lines or not under utility lines, soil type
and approval by the Commission, all of which is
included in the application request form.
The first Living Remembrance tree was planted
on Allison Avenue in front of Washington High School. Helen
Engel, Secretary of the Commission, planted a tree in rememberance
of her mother, Helen Mitchell Gottshall, who was a member
of the first graduating class of June, 1932. A plaque was
placed at this site designating the significance of the launching
of the Living Remembrance Program. Helen Engel has been the
sponsor of the Program since its inception.
Costs are borne by the donor and include
purchasing the appropriate tree, site preparation and planting.
The location and name of the person or occasion being remembered
by the tree planting will be placed in a special Register
at City Hall for reference by interested persons, as well
as a Living Remembrance Certificate issued to the donor
The street scape of Allison Avenue from
Hall Avenue to Tyler Avenue has been designated as the first
continuous planting of Remembrance Trees. However, other locations
could be available throughout the City upon approval by the
Commission. It is our hope the Commission can provide a walking
tour of trees based on the Registry maintained at City Hall
for relatives and friends.
